The various methods of Windshield Repair
Other foreign objects and rocks could create damage to your car's windshield. The force of something that impacts your windshield could cause cracks, chips, or even shatter your windshield. If your windshield is damaged, you might be interested in the procedure for repairing a damaged windshield. These are the three most commonly used methods for windshield repair.
Windshield Patch
The windshield repair is generally sold as DIY repair kits. This windshield repair method is not used by professional technicians since it's not one of the most efficient repair methods. If you've got chipped or a small crack in your car, apply the patch or film over the damaged area, cutting it into a smaller size. Then, you smooth out the patch and let it cure. The patch will become hard, strengthening the region. The patch is not able to penetrate into the chip or crack and is not able to make the glass stronger. It serves to keep the crack or chip together, preventing further cracking.
Windshield Resin
Windshield resin is the most popular windshield repair technique used frequently by professionals to repair cracks or chips on the windshield of your vehicle. Resin is injectable into the chip or crack. A source of heat is utilized to heat the surface, which causes the resin to solidify. In the process, the resin expands slightly which helps to fill cracks or chips. This stops the chip or cracks from spreading and strengthens the area that is affected.
Replacing the Windshield
The final method for repair to the windshield glass is to replace the windshield. There are some cracks or chips that can be fixed. If the chip is larger than the size of a quarter, it might not be filled. If a chip is bigger than the diameter of a $1 bill it shouldn't be repaired. If a crack or chip was previously repaired and continues to increase in size the crack should not be repaired again.
Additionally, certain cracks or chips aren't clear. They may have chips or cracks branching off from the original cracks or chips. They should not be repaired also. If you observe any of these signs the windshield needs to be replaced, not repaired. This means removing the old windshield and replacing it with the new glass in the spot. This job should be done by experts and shouldn't be undertaken on your own.
